The inside story
This piece was recorded entirely at my home using a Power Computing 604/132mhz computer running Cubase Audio XT VST. All the keyboards, bass and drums are via MIDI. The percussion was all played live on instruments found around the house (OK, so my wife's a drummer/percussionist - we're not exactly talkin' pots and pans here). The guitars were recorded direct using an ESP Stratocaster with DiMarzio pickups played through an ART Power Plant, which is a glorious device invented by my friend Buck Brundage. The vocals were recorded with a CAD Equitek II microphone through an ART Tube Mic Pre and the whole shebang went through a CAD Maxcon console for monitoring.
The keyboards and synths used include: Ensoniq TS-12 keyboard, ASR-10 rack, and MR Rack, Kurzweil K2000RS, Roland JV-1080, JD-990, and P-330, Korg Wavestation A/D and SR, and Emu Orbit
The whole piece was transcribed and recorded during my spare time in one week. It was mixed a few weeks later with Alec Head, engineer par excellance, at Nile Rodgers' studio on a 32 channel ProTools system with Cubase Audio XT running the performances live - no tape was used at any point in the process. Nile's studio contains a 56 input Mackie console, Summit and DeMaria Tube Compressors, Eventide DSP 4000 and H3000SE, Lexicon 480L, PCM70 and PCM 42, Ensoniq DP/4, DBX 160x, Panasonic SV 3800 DAT and Nakamichi Cassette.
Thanks to Nile Rodgers, Alec Head, Ensoniq, CAD, ART, Buck Brundage, and my wonderful wife and kids who kept pretty darn quiet and left me alone, except when I asked for their support, during the whole thing.
