Phil, the eldest Shulman brother, was in the band for its first four albums: [[Gentle Giant]], [[Acquiring The Taste]], [[Three Friends]], and [[Octopus]].  He was one of the primary composers, and fans say that his influence gave an introspective feeling to the music.  Phil was also an accomplished multi-instrumentalist and sang lead vocals.
