Before hearing GG, I had read their listing in my trusty handbook [Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock] many a times, and can still recite the description..."the dissonance of Bartok within rock dynamics" [sic]. So finally, about five years ago, I'm tape shopping (hadn't made the cd plunge yet), and see Gentle Giant in the racks of Record Town or Coconuts or something cheesy like that.
