I saw GG many times in the mid 70s (every chance I got, including at the Roxy in LA in 1980) as I was beginning my professional career as a bass player. It might interest you to know that a few of the members of the Tuesday Night Music Club, despite being known for pop music because of such huge sales of one of our projects, were big GG fans. Although Kevin Gilbert could play anything at all from any band of the period, the place that he and Bill Bottrell and myself connected was in our mutual love for GG. That they could rock and challenge and had such a sense of humor on stage made them unique, and uniquely brilliant.
Of course I learned every single note of the bass from every record many years ago. I still think Ray is one of the greatest. In the mid-70s I was in a very deliberate and serious progressive rock band and seeing Ray bouncing around and chewing gum on stage liberated me.
