I saw GG at the Utica, New York concert on Jan 29, 1974. I will be honest, they were the opening band for J Geils and I had never heard of GG before that evening. I was blown away, they put on a better show than J Geils ever could.
At that time in my life, I was enjoying some well misspent youth and filtered a couple joints during the concert. GG was playing music that I had not only never heard, but never heard anything like them before. One thing that to this day still sticks out in my head was the dude playing the xylophone. He got into it and soon he was doing a solo. His hands were moving so fast it looked like a blur and he never missed a beat. the place was packed and everybody got into it. I saw most of the big bands back in the 70's and I will always put GG right up there with the best of them.
Then when J Geils perfomed, what a dissapointment. Yeah, they were good, but they never jammed, just played every note as it was heard on their albums.
